Dogs are just as complicated and sophisticated in their fears and anxieties as human beings are. For many dogs being groomed creates and overwhelming sense of anxiety each and every time grooming is needed. There are some very basic steps that dog owners can take to reduce this anxiety however, and with a little patience, grooming can become a pleasurable experience for your dog.
Talk to your dog while you are grooming it. Dogs thrive on auditory feedback; keeping a running conversation with your dog during its grooming has a soothing and calming effect on your dog. Be well prepared to groom your dog. Avoid long interruptions in the grooming process by planning out the steps that you wish to take while grooming your dog. Keep all necessary supplies close by, and laid out in a logical and orderly way.
Avoid jerky and frenetic movements. Proceed with the grooming routine in a slow methodical manner. Many dog owners find that it helps to explain what’s happening, out loud, to their dogs as they move through each step of the process. Much like children, dogs respond well to a combination of physical movements and auditory cues. If you are trimming your dog’s hair or nails, use proper equipment and proceed carefully. Dogs are just as vulnerable to injuries as human beings, and in some cases, can take far longer to recover from wounds.
Today, many of us prefer to take our dogs to professional dog groomers. A professional do groomer will use all of the aforementioned techniques, as well as other methods based upon their training and experience with animal psychology. Thoroughly examine the working environment of any professional groomer before committing your dog to their care. If the establishment is unclean, if the animals there seem overly excited or anxious you are best advised to look for a better establishment to groom your dog. Also, if a Dog Grooming establishment seems to have far more animals around than its staff can reasonably accommodate, seeking a less busy Dog Groomer would be a good idea.
Overall, Grooming can be a therapeutic and relaxing experience for any dog. As long as patience, compassion and care are taken when grooming your dog, anxiety need not be part of the Grooming process.
